Winning by Losing is generally a weight loss instructional book at the same time an inspirational book for those who are in need of losing weight. The book is divided into three general sections: Self, Science and Sweat.

Self is a section that focuses on how the author was able to get over her own weight problem. This is section is the inspirational part. The emotional side of weight loss problem is also discussed here. According to the author, the book will not teach readers how to lose weight instantly. She said losing weight is all about time investment with hard work. The author stressed that people have to prepare themselves emotionally and mentally as the first step to be successful in any weight loss endeavor. She believes that building a support group will be of great help but putting away your negative self image is the most important.

The second section is entitled Science wherein numbers related to weight loss are broken down into smaller pieces for each reader to understand the basics of losing weight. It is in this section that the author explained thoroughly how our body works in as much as weight loss is concerned. The concept of metabolism, macronutrients ratios, carbohydrates and fats and types of oxidizer are also discussed. There are tips on how to read food labels, eating the right food at home and when eating out in this section.

The author’s discussion on how to calculate one’s own BMR and AMR are very helpful. According to her, determining your BMR and AMR will serve as your guide to make your own “caloric regiment”. Apart from this, you need to determine what type of oxidizer you are: slow, balanced, or fast. This information will guide you on ratio of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that your body needs.

It will be easier for you to determine the right food type for you. All you have to do is refer to the list of food that is appropriate for your body type. This is organized in a way that you can choose the food that will help you attain your weight loss goal. The book however lacks information or instructions on how to mix those types of food together into a meal.

The last section is entitled Sweat. It is in this section that the author discussed the benefits of exercise in order to attain your weight loss goal. She also provided description of the different types of exercises. This section is centered on the 12 week fitness workout program. The details of the specific workouts were explained including the alterations. The author also explained why we need to continue with good cardio workouts for the rest of our lives. The workout program is tedious as you are required to do four days of circuit, a day of cardio exercise and two days of nuthin.

The book is good for serious weight losers and those who really have time to do all the required workouts.
